The original McDonald’s In 1940, Richard and Maurice McDonald opened McDonald's Bar-B-Q in San Bernardino, California as a drive-in with car hop service. In 1948, they revamped it into a self-service model with a simple nine-item menu, including a 15-cent hamburger, laying the groundwork for the modern fast-food industry.
